Icy road conditions cause several injuries in crash Sunday

Michigan State Police responded to a two vehicle crash involving entrapment on US-12  in Niles Township.

The crash happened Saturday around 9:25 p.m.

Police say a Mercury traveling east lost control while on an icy bridge over the St. Joseph River.

Officers say the vehicle crossed over the center line and was struck by an Acura traveling west.

Two people in the Mercury were entrapped in the vehicle with injuries.

While emergency workers were attempting extricate the two passengers, a Ford Mustang traveling east lost control on the icy bridge.

Police say the Mustang struck a Niles Township Fire truck that was protecting the scene and then struck the Mercury that emergency personnel were surrounding.

The two patients remained inside of the vehicle.

A deputy, paramedic, and an off duty nurse assisting at the scene sustained minor injuries from the secondary crash.  

All occupants of the Mercury were transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.  Police do not believe alcohol is a factor in either of the crashes, however driving too fast for the icy conditions this night was a factor in both crashes.

Police say further charges for the driver of the Mustang will be reviewed by the Prosecutor’s office because the driver did not have a license.
