South Bend family escapes house fire unharmed

Firefighters were called to a house fire just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

The fire happened in the 900 North Block of Leland Avenue in South Bend.

A neighbor says a family of seven lives in the home.

When firefighters got to the scene, all but one person was out of the house.

Paramedics worked to get the last person out safely.

"There was heavy to moderate damage to the house involved at 917, and some minor damage to the house at 919 where my crews were able to help to prevent the fire from spreading to that house,” said South Bend Battalion Chief Mark Catanzarite.

At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined.

According to neighbors, the ages of the children range from two months to 12 years old.
