Child killed in hit and run, other driver being sought

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Police are searching for the driver in a fatal hit and run that happened on Vassar Avenue and O'Brien Street in South Bend.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m.

Investigators say a Chrysler 300 and a Dodge Durango SUV collided in the intersection. A passenger in the SUV, a 6-year-old girl, died at the scene.

The other two people in the SUV, the girl's grandmother and her brother, were uninjured.

The driver of the Chrysler 300 left the scene on foot. She is described as a black female wearing a black shirt and black flowered pants.

Police have made contact with the owner of the Chrysler 300, but have not released any further information.

A nearby resident's security cameras picked up the fatal crash. The video is posted with the other videos at the top of the story.

St. Joseph County FACT is investigating.

An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fort Wayne.
