Police: Man kills himself while handling gun he thought wasn't loaded

A 20-year-old man killed himself with a gun he believed was not loaded, according to Benton Charter Township Police.

Police were called to the 3000 block of Fieldtree around 2:50 p.m. on Thursday to investigate a shooting.

Witnesses told police the 20 year old victim did not believe the firearm was functioning or loaded when he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not believe foul play is a factor.
