The Fighting Irish returned to the hardwood Monday, as Notre Dame's men's basketball season began with the first official practice.

Last season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but head coach Mike Brey says the team's expectations are as high as they have ever been.

"[We're] driven by a senior class to play in a Final Four and an ACC Championship game," said Brey. "I think we've hit a new level of confidence and our program ... and when you have veterans like I have, there's no reason to think it's not possible."

Despite the loss of impact players V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia, the Irish still return a talented group of seniors. That group includes Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell, and Austin Torres.

"We've had a great rotation of older teams," said Brey. "This group is as good as any of them as far as getting it, understanding, working, and wanting to do it together. I think the maturity of the group really helps."

Colson, an All American caliber player, returns to Notre Dame in hopes of capping his career by accomplishing that goal of making a Final Four.

"We all think we can accomplish those goals as a team," said Colson. "We're ready to do that, and make that step.

"The confidence is still there. We've always had that as a team. I think it starts with Coach Brey, then goes down to me and Matt and the other captains on the team. Once you have that experience as a team, our confidence is at the sky"

While this is just the first practice of the season, the Fighting Irish will have to wait to hit the floor for a game that counts. The regular season is still over a month away, as the opener against Depaul is set for November 11.

"We're excited just to play a game," said Colson, "[We can't wait] to put our jerseys on and just compete."
