Michigan State Trooper opens fire on suspect in Benton Harbor
KETTERING, Ohio (CNN) -- The Kettering Police Department says an officer fired several shots into a van after a man inside started reaching for a gun.
While talking with the people inside the van, Officer Jonathan McCoy saw a gun in the pocket of a passenger.
McCoy told 33-year-old Jason Hoops not to reach for it.
Officials say Hoops reportedly dropped his hands towards the gun anyway.
That's when McCoy shot hoops.
Hoops was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The police chief believes the officer acted appropriately.
"From what I've seen on this video. I'm pretty confident in saying that this officer did a very good job," Chief Chip Prostman said.
The police chief says Hoops had a warrant out for his arrest.
He also was previously convicted for assault.
McCoy has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
