NILES, Mich. -- The husband of the woman who was killed in her Niles home on Sunday, allegedly during a home invasion, is being held on a charge of homicide, according to the Berrien County Sheriff's Department.
John Benton Lewis will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
On Sunday, Lewis told deputies several suspects entered his home at 1429 Lawndale Avenue, and shot his wife, Carla Jean Lewis, in the basement. He said they then fled the scene in his wife's Mazda.
John was arrested for violations of the medical marijuana act on Sunday.
He was arraigned on that charge Tuesday. His family attended the hearing and were expecting him to be released on bond afterwards.
He might be released on bond after his arraignment on the murder charge on Wednesday.
Deputies are still asking for help locating Carla's Mazda CX-9 with Michigan registration CMY 3721.
Any occupants of the vehicle should be considered armed and extremely dangerous, deputies said. If you see the vehicle, please call 9-1-1.
If you have any information in the homicide, please contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at (269) 983-7141 extension #7224.
