Gas line struck outside Berrien County Sheriff's Office, jail

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- A contractor struck and cut a natural gas line while doing excavation work outside the Berrien County Sheriff's Office. The gas leak led to the relocation of several inmates and staff members.

The jail was not evacuated, according to the sheriff's office.

The break happened around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Members of the St Joseph City Department of Public Safety, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, and the County's Building and Grounds Department stood by while employees of Michigan Gas Utilities responded to the scene and shut off the gas line that was damaged.

The sheriff's office says they continually monitored the air quality inside the jail to ensure inmates and staff were not in danger.

There were no injuries in the incident.
