Firefighters installing smoke alarms for South Bend residents

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – South Bend Firefighters announced their plan to team up with the American Red Cross to install smoke alarms in LaSalle Park Neighborhood homes that are needed.

The installation dates are Wednesday, July 18th and Thursday, July 19th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

The firefighters, Red Cross volunteers, and members of La Casa de Amistad will install up to three alarms in each home.

“Every home in the city must be protected with a working smoke alarm; alarms should be on every level of the home.” Fire

Chief Stephen Cox said.

The alarms and installations are free for South Bend residents. And Canvass will provide for the Sheridan, Lombardy, Western,

and Linden Streets area.

“Education is a key component to our program. Adults and children need to know what to do when the alarm “beeps” and what to do if smoke or flames block your exit. A working alarm, practicing an escape plan and sleeping with your bedroom door closed can help during a fire!” Captain Gerard Ellis said regarding the smoke alarm objective.

For further information, call the South Bend Fire Department at 235-9255 or the American Red Cross at 234-0191.
