ELKHART, Ind. - A terrifying scene turning into a tragedy.
It all unfolded just after 7:30 a.m. at a house on Myrtle Street, which is split into front and back apartments.
Police helped firefighters secure the scene, finding a man's body on the first floor. His dog also died in the blaze.
As of right now, the name of the man who died still has not been released.
ABC57 is told a second man managed to get out of a second story window as the flames tore through and was not hurt.
Division Chief of Operations for Elkhart fire department David Cushwa says with fires like this, it affects the entire team.
“We take it personally, as our job, to save everyone we come in contact with. It does affect our personnel.”
The Fire Marshal and Elkhart County Homicide Unit is working together to determine the cause--per protocol.
