SOUTH BEND, Ind.—A body was found in the St. Joseph River on Wednesday, according to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.
Police vehicles, the coroner and the fire department could be seen on the scene in the 200 block of E. Marion Street around 9:30 a.m.
City street crews discovered the body Wednesday morning and called police.
The male body was pulled from the river and an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Fort Wayne.
According to CMHU, foul play is not suspected and the person is believed to have been there for at least a month.
The coroner said the person had ID but they will not be releasing the identity until it is confirmed.
The ID is the same as a person who was the subject of a missing persons report, the coroner said.
South Bend Police contacted the family of Garrett Gilpin, who was reported missing, and said the body is believed to be his.
Gilpin, 32, was last seen on October 17 in downtown South Bend.
