Elkhart elementary staff member arrested for bringing gun to school

UPDATE:  On May 13, there was one person arrested in Elkhart County on charges of possession of a firearm on school property, that person was 40-year-old Marissa Meyer. Police originally had the name down as Melissa Meyer. She was substitute teaching a second-grade class on Monday, May 13. 

ELKHART, Ind. -- A staff member at Mary Beck Elementary School in Elkhart has been arrested for bringing a handgun onto school grounds Monday morning.

“This morning our administration received a report from a staff member that another staff member brought a handgun into Mary Beck Elementary School," officials said. "Our Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management investigated, located the weapon, and removed the staff member from the classroom. The incident was reported to the Elkhart Police Department, and the staff member was arrested."

The school said the safety of its students is always top priority and they thank the person who "was vigilant and quickly reported the incident.”

The arrest will be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review of criminal charges, but the name of the staff member has not been released yet.
