INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- For this week’s road trip, we headed to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum!
“I think the most important for people to understand is this is a year-round destination,” says Eric Powell, Director of Communications for IMS Museum.
Situated within the iconic, 2.5-mile track, the IMS museum is recognized as one of the most visible museums in the world dedicated to automobiles and auto racing.
Constructed in 1909, it offers exhibit space featuring cars, trophies, photographs, racing records and more. While some notable items are featured year-round, visitors can expect something new, too.
“This museum has a reputation that it kind of stayed the same and that is not the case anymore, we are changing exhibits every 6 months,” says Powell.
Currently, the museum features two temporary exhibits. One highlighting the four-time Indy 500 champion, Rick Mears. The other exhibit showcasing the life of Andy Granatelli the marketing wizard who turned STP oil treatment into a globally recognized brand.
But beyond May, the museum also offers tours of the track. The ‘Kiss the Bricks’ tour includes a lap around the track with a stop at the yard of bricks. For the most committed of race fans, the golf cart tours provide a 2-hour, in-depth tour of the speedway and grounds.
