Valparaiso man in stable condition after self-inflicted gunshot wound

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. - According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Conservation Officers are investigating an incident in which a Valparaiso man accidentally shot himself while he was hunting deer.

On Sunday at around 7:30 a.m., Conservation Officers were dispatched to the Kingsbury Fish & Wildlife Area in LaPorte County on reports that a hunter had shot himself in the leg.

Conservation Officers say that 48-year-old Vincent Fischer was attempting to holster his .44 caliber pistol when it discharged into his right leg.

Fischer's juvenile son called 911 when the incident occured. The son also used a belt on Fischer's leg to reduce the bleeding.

Fischer is in stable condition. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injury.

An investigation is ongoing.
