Traffic violations lead to discovery of narcotics

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – Two people were arrested Monday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office reported.

At 9:06 a.m., a deputy was on duty in the 7000 east block of S.R. 2 when he noticed a passenger vehicle in the driving lane following too closely behind another vehicle.

The deputy also noticed the vehicle move abruptly from the driving to the passing lane, committing another traffic violation, deputies said.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 6000 east block of S.R. 2.

As the deputy was performing the traffic stop, another deputy arrived to assist.

The K-9 partner of the first deputy sniffed around the outside of the vehicle and alerted the deputies to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, reports said.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, deputies said.

37-year-old Jermaine Young of Harvey, Illinois, was arrested for alleged dealing in methamphetamine, deputies said. Young remains in the La Porte County Jail on a $50,005 cash-only bond.

26-year-old Chelsey Smith of Anderson, Indiana, was arrested for alleged unlawful possession of a syringe, deputies said. Smith remains in the La Porte County Jail on a $755 cash-only bond.
