SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Venues Parks and Arts, along with Howard Park are partnering with Beacon Health System for a special week of programming specifically for senior citizens in the community.

The festivities will take place next week August 29 through September 1.

There will be a range of activities offered from learning programs to fitness and social events.

One event many seniors are looking forward to is the return of the senior picnic, which was put on hold due to the pandemic.

A light breakfast will be provided on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday is the day of the picnic and concert, with a performance by P.T and the Cruisers.

According to Senior Advisor blog, it is important for seniors to remain active and social within their communities for a number of reasons. Senior loneliness is unfortunately common and serious. Being lonely can sometimes give seniors a higher chance of experiencing certain health issues – such as higher blood pressure or even an increased risk of Alzheimer’s.

The CDC has also linked general loneliness and social isolation to serious health conditions through different studies.

Jonathan Jones, Director of Recreational Activities for South Bend Venues Parks and Arts says,

“Sometimes our senior groups get left out, so we wanted to make sure that we created something that we’re being very adamant about identifying programming for that specific group," said Jonathan Jones, Director of Recreational Activities for South Bend Venues Parks and Arts.

The hope is that these events will give seniors a chance to get out and meet other seniors in the community – while enjoying fun activities to get them up and moving.

Information on the events and how to register can be found at the South Bend Venue Parks and Arts website.
