Michigan creates website with info about insurance coverage of COVID-19 tests

Michigan has launched a website to help residents with information about the federal rule that requires insurance providers cover the cost of at-home COVID-19 tests.

“Ensuring that every Michigander has access to convenient at-home COVID-19 testing is an important part of our strategy for keeping Michiganders safe,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Our new website provides Michiganders the information they need to take advantage of this new insurance benefit that could save a family of four up to $384 per month.”

The rule requires insurers cover the cost of 8 at-home COVID-19 tests per month for each person on the health care plan.

Insurers can establish a network of preferred providers to provide the tests with no out-of-pocket costs or may require you to purchase the tests and submit claims for reimbursement.

Insurance covered home tests are in addition to the free at-home tests provided in the mail by the federal government.
