SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A local non-profit, La Casa de Amistad, is gearing up for its second-ever ‘Dia de Mercados’, or ‘Market Day’, this Saturday.
The organization started in 1973 as a youth outreach program, and it now functions as a community and youth center.
Their services extend not only to teens, but also adults, immigrants and seasonal workers.
‘Dia de Mercados’ is a day for Latino-owned businesses to get a little more exposure and interaction with the local community.
30 Latino-owned businesses will be on site to showcase their goods and services, along with two different Mexican food vendors selling food and drinks.
Kids can enjoy face painting on Saturday, and free haircuts will be offered to people of all ages by a local beauty school.
There will also be an appearance by DJ Dolphin, who will run the music the event.
It’s all taking place during Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated in the United States September 15th through October 15th.
It is a time to recognize and celebrate the many achievements, cultures, histories and contributions from the Latino community.
Just over 15% of South Bend’s population are Hispanic, according to the 2020 census.
Michiana is also an agricultural hotspot, and many of the seasonal workers who spend long hours getting crops ready in the fields are Latino.
You can find more information about this Saturday’s event on La Casa de Amistad’s Facebook page.
