Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office warns public about telephone scam

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a telephone scam.

An investigation of the scam showed that suspects are falsely identifying themselves as employees of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office.

The scammers are using the identities such as Captain Kenny and Sergeant Newsome.

The sheriff’s office confirms that those names do not belong to any current employees.

The callers ask potential victims for Google Play cards, amounting to $4,000, to satisfy outstanding warrants.

Police also report that the scammers are able to make it appear that the call is coming from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office.

It is not standard for a law enforcement agency to ask for that kind of payment or to ask for payment over the phone.

Anyone who has received a phone call like this is urged to call local law enforcement to report it.
