MIDDLEBURY, Ind.—A fourth grade student at Heritage Intermediate School, Abbigayle DiPietro, passed away on Wednesday after contracting bacterial meningitis.

A fundraiser on Facebook has been set up for Abbi's family's expenses. A Meal Train has also been organized for the family.

Over $10,000 has been raised in two days.

Middlebury Community Schools superintendent Jane Allen sent the following note out to parents:

Out of respect for Abbi and her family’s privacy, we cannot share specific details with you. However, the doctor who treated her, along with the Elkhart County Health Department, confirmed that Abbi’s illness was NOT contagious and that her circumstances are rare. Your child is NOT at any risk regarding Abbi’s form of illness.

The superintendent also said that counselors would be available at Heritage Intermediate and other school buildings to help students and staff.
