Driver in fatal crash sentenced to 14 years

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A driver has been sentenced for a fatal crash that killed a 60-year-old woman who was headed home from bible study, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

Alan Tarchala has been sentenced to two years for causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle with a schedule I or II substance in the body, 2 years for possession of methamphetamine and 10 years for causing death when operating a motor vehicle with a schedule I or II controlled substance in the blood. The sentences will run consecutively for a total of 14 years.

The crash happened January 26 in the area of Bremen Highway and Petro Drive.

Investigators said Tarchala's Jeep was traveling southbound when he lost control, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on.

Sherry Amiel, 60, was killed in the crash. Her daughter, who was driving, suffered serious injuries in the crash.
