SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- An urgent search is underway to fill a bus driver shortage for South Bend Community School Corporation. Right now the district needs at least 40 drivers.
To address this need, the SBCSC held its fourth hiring event at WorkOne of St. Joseph County. The school received interest from five people.
Parents in the area tell us the current shortage is causing delayed pick up and drop off times for some students and has been off and on for quite a while.
George Jones, a spokesperson with SBCSC, said the district is making progress. There are 26 drivers pending for hire. Once those go through, the district will need 16 more drivers. Jones admitted the progress is slow because of the five exams recruits need to pass to earn their CDL. Recruits must also go through a four week training period with the school.
The next WorkOne hiring event will be on May 30.
