MISHAWAKA, Ind. – A run is supporting children and families in need in Michiana.
The South Bend Marines and Post #095 of the Marine Corps League hosted the 14th annual Marine Mud Run Saturday morning at Marian High School.
More than 400 people participated in the 5k. Organizers say they’re trying to raise $15,000 for Toys for Tots.
“There’s so many children in our community that go without sufficient toys and presents and the Toys for Tots program has been run by the Marine Corps Reserves, it was started by the Marine Corps Reserves in the 1940s with the World War II veterans, and it’s progressed until today,” said Mic Marosz.
Toys for Tots is a nonprofit that provides gifts to families in need during the holiday season. Event coordinators say there are many needy children in Michiana. They say children who go without gifts during Christmas are at risk of having low self-esteem and depression.
“Every Christmas Eve there’s a small group of us that go to Memorial Hospital and we take toys up to children in the children’s ward of Memorial Hospital, hopefully brighten their Christmas,” said Marosz. “Very emotional the things those children go through. Very difficult.”
