MISHAWAKA, Ind. - One man in critical condition after a hit-and-run in Mishawaka. Police say a SUV hit a moped and drove away late Monday night, injuring the moped driver.
The hit-and-run happened around 10:40 P.M. at the intersection of 3rd and Cedar streets.
Police say the moped driver was a 54-year-old man from Mishawaka. The man was rushed into surgery Monday night.
Witnesses say they saw the driver face down on the street after hearing the crash.
"There was blood everywhere. I talked to another girl and she said somebody hit him and took off. Then the ambulance and fire truck got here and they turned him over, threw him on the gurney and took off with him. It didn't look good," said Lisa Whalen, who lives in the area.
She says the neighborhood is usually quiet. When she saw the man, she wanted to help.
"You want to try and help somebody but you cant go touch them because...the cops are here and they’re trying to do their investigation so you just cant help, and its sad,” said Whalen.
Police are still searching for the SUV. They say it is a newer model, black vehicle and should have some damage to the front.
