Penn High School and Indiana Toll Road team up to plant trees

The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company and Penn High School students will team up to plant 100 trees along the toll road Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to organizers, the effort is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative which is a project dedicated to protecting the Great Lakes.

All of the trees will be provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Organizers with the ITR said Tuesday will be for digging holes while Wednesday, bur oak and northern pecan trees will be planted.

Both species of trees are native to the northwestern Indiana area and will be able to provide cover and protection for wildlife.

Toll road officials say this is the second year a mass-planting event has been planned. Last year, over 700 trees were rooted in the ground.

Following alongside the ITR's sustainability efforts, travel plazas are now partially being powered by solar energy.
