Gas leak stopped, reopening Elkhart roads

ELKHART, Ind. – A gas leak from a car that crashed into an apartment building caused a section of downtown Elkhart to be evacuated Thursday afternoon.

The roads have been re-opened and the building is no longer evacuated.

NIPSCO said the car crashed into the side of an apartment building at 229 West Jackson Boulevard.

Elkhart Police Dispatch says this crash happened around 2:45 p.m.

Emergency responders evacuated the 3rd Street from Jefferson to Lexington Streets and temporarily closed 2nd Street and Jackson Boulevard.

NIPSCO crews stopped the leak and announced that residents are able to return to the apartment building.
