Police: Traffic stop leads to discovery of drugs, gun in Dowagiac

DOWAGIAC, Mich. – Two people were arrested after a traffic stop led to the discovery of marijuana and a semi-automatic handgun Friday evening.

According to the Dowagiac Police Department, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Park Place for a registration violation around 7:50 p.m.

Officers say they could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The driver allegedly admitted that all of the occupants had been using marijuana in the vehicle.

Everyone involved was detained while a search of the vehicle uncovered marijuana, scales and distribution supplies, the loaded handgun, and a box of ammunition, police say.

A 20-year-old passenger from Dowagiac was arrested for felony possession of a firearm, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and possession of marijuana.

Another passenger, a 21-year-old from Wisconsin, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and maintaining a drug vehicle.

The total number of individuals involved is unclear.

Officers say they will continue to investigate.
