NOW: New dash-cam video released after Chikaming Twp. Police officer hit

CHIKAMING TWP., -- There’s new dash-cam video that shows part of what happened the night a passing car hit Chikaming Twp. Police Officer David Wyman earlier this month.

It was Sunday, November 12 around 9:30 p.m. along I-94 East in Sawyer.

The video shows – from the view of the dashboard inside a patrol car – a police cruiser being hit from behind and the car responsible rolling past it seconds later.

Officer Wyman was behind his cruiser, finishing up helping a vehicle stuck in a ditch, when he was hit by the car before it slammed into his patrol car.

Wyman was seriously injured and needed surgeries.

He’s now in stable condition and is beginning a long recovery; but he’s dealing with some kidney issues.

A GoFundMe has been started for the husband and father of four.

He’s only been with the Chikaming Twp. Police Department for three months, after moving with his family from North Dakota to Michiana.

His wife is pregnant with twins, so any financial support will help.

A 67-year-old man from Lansing was driving the car that hit Officer Wyman.

Chikaming Twp. Police Chief Todd Taylor said Tuesday that the case has been forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office for review of possible criminal charges.

Taylor also said Wyman and his wife are not yet ready to talk about his recovery, but they are grateful for the continued prayers and support.
