Man accused of stealing car with toddler in backseat identified

SOUTH BEND. Ind. – South Bend Police have identified the man accused of stealing a car with a 3-year-old in the backseat.

Police named 28-year-old James Brown as the person responsible for the carjacking Tuesday afternoon.

Around 4:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a Phillips 66 gas station on West Western Avenue where Brown allegedly stole the green Honda Accord with the child still in the vehicle.

Approximately an hour later, the stolen vehicle, the child, and Brown were found less than two miles away near the intersection of Mayflower Road and Sample Street.

According to St. Joseph County Jail logs, Brown is facing charges of criminal confinement and theft.

The child was not injured and was safely reunited with his family.
