Cat dies in fire at building on Pearl Street in downtown Winamac

WINAMAC, Ind. -- An apartment on the second floor of the M.A. Dilts building on Pearl Street in downtown Winamac caught fire Wednesday afternoon.

The fire started around 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters were on scene quickly and worked to extinguish the fire, which affected one of the three apartments on the second floor.

During the fire, an air conditioning unit fell onto a car parked in front of the building, causing damage to the front end.

The renters were not home when the fire started, but said their cat died as a result of the fire.

The apartment is a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
