Assistant Chief Bill Thompson is leaving the St. Joseph County Police Department.
He is taking a position with the University of Notre Dame.
He is leaving the police department at the end of the week.
Thompson has been with the St. Joseph County Police for over 20 years and has been a police officer for over 35 years.
